Microsoft Word 2007: file type is blocked from opening in this version by your registry policy setting

Filed under: Nipid — Sander @ 10:16:00

Today, a documentation of an old system landed to my inbox – and when I tried to open it, I received a message I had never seen before:

WordSecurity You are attempting to open a file that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office. This file type is blocked from opening in this version by your registry policy setting.

This error occurs if you try to open a Microsoft Office document and the file type for that document has been blocked by a registry policy setting. To help secure your computer, Microsoft or the administrator of this computer implemented a registry policy setting that prevents opening this type of file.
To open documents with this file type, disable the registry policy setting. For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 922850.

The fix is to insert the following registry keys:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Security\FileOpenBlock]
"FilesBeforeVersion"=dword:00000000
"BinaryFiles"=dword:00000000
"RtfFiles"=dword:00000000

Just save it to a file with .reg exension and double-click on it. Remember to close MS Word first!

  1. The recommended registry changes do work for some users, but not for others.

    This is not a complete, nor is it the correct way for Microsoft to fix this new problem that they have created for Office 2007 Word users.

  2. this is not a problem they created in office 2007, it goes back to (at least 2003). And if you have office 2003, this fix still works privided you change the 12.0 to 11.0 in the first line.
